A second location of the popular East Atlanta Village bagel shop opened July 8 as part of a new phase of the Studioplex complex along the Eastside BeltLine. In addition to serving a variety of New York City-style bagels and schmear and bagel sandwiches, look for coffee, cold brew, drinks like egg creams, and weekly food specials such as an inverted grilled cheese bagel sandwich. Once installed, an automat will eventually allow people to hop off the BeltLine to order, pay for, and receive hot bagel sandwiches without entering the shop. Think of an automat – invented in Berlin in 1895, and brought to the U.S. in 1902 by the Horn and Hardart company – as an automated self-service operation similar to a vending machine but with hot grab-and-go food.
Mother-daughter duo Deanna and Jackie Halcrow first opened Emerald City Bagels on Glenwood Avenue in East Atlanta Village seven years ago. Before opening the shop, the Halcrows ran Emerald City as a bagel pop-up at farmers’ markets. Emerald City also sells bagels by the baker’s dozen and offers no-contact delivery via its Bagel Fairy service.
The owners behind Birria El Gordo in Marietta open El Gordo at Uptown Atlanta near the Lindbergh MARTA station on Tuesday, July 9 . The restaurant serves Mexico City-style street tacos, the family’s popular birria, and dishes like tostadas. Expect tequila cocktails from the bar, a large patio facing Main Street, and live music from mariachi bands and DJs.
El Gordo joins J’ouvert Caribbean Kitchen, 26 Thai Kitchen, and restaurant incubator Uptown Test Kitchen at the complex. Bene Korean Steakhouse, White Windmill Bakery, and Madre Selva should open by the end of the year.
Coffee house and wine bar Cafe Bartique opened earlier this month in Cascade Heights. Taking over the former BUZZ Coffee and Winehouse space on Cascade Road, Cafe Bartique serves coffee and coffee drinks, juices, and wine along with pastries, baked goods, croissant sandwiches, and light bites throughout the day. A grand opening will take place on Monday, July 15. Until then, Cafe Bartique will serve a limited food and drink menu.
Cafe Bartique joins a handful of new Black-owned restaurants in the neighborhood, including Orethea’s at the Point from Chef Deborah VanTrece, Barrio ATL, and Aiskrimu Ice Cream Bar.
