July and August Atlanta literary events

Here’s a rundown of local events for book lovers and writers across the metro Atlanta area.

🔥 On Mon., July 15 at 7 p.m., the Garden Club at Wild Heaven West End hosts Taffy Brodesser-Akner in honor of her highly-anticipated new book, “Long Island Compromise.” The author will appear in conversation with Jessica Handler, award-winning author and Atlanta native. Tickets are $35 and include a signed hardcover edition of the book .

🖍️ On Tues. July 16, 23, and 30, the Virginia Highlands Kids Storytime will meet from 10:30-11 a.m. at Virginia Highlands Books . Sheri Dillard, the author of the children’s book “Cowhide-And-Seek”, leads the group every Tuesday. This event is free and open to the public .

🎻 On Wed., July 17 at 7 p.m., Eagle Eye Book Shop is hosting Julie Soto to celebrate her new book “Not Another Love Song” for a book signing! She will be in conversation with Kate Goldbeck, author of “You, Again.” To attend the event, you must pre-order the book or buy the book at the venue !

🏛️ On Thurs., July 18 at 7 p.m., The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library welcomes Joshua A. Douglas to discuss his important new book, “The Court v. The Voters: The Troubling Story of How the Supreme Court Has Undermined Voting Rights.” The book is a gripping look at the erosion of voting rights and its implications for democracy, told through the stories of 9 Supreme Court decisions—and the next looming case. This event is free and open to the public . Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the venue through A Capella Books.

⚖️ On Mon., July 22 at 7 p.m., leading anthropologist Aisha M. Beliso-De Jesús discusses her powerful new book, “ Excited Delirium: Race, Police Violence, and the Invention of a Disease ” at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library . She will appear in conversation with journalist Josie Duffy Rice. The book sheds light on where racism, medicine, and systemic injustice meet. This event is free and open to the public . Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the venue through A Capella Books.

🐕 On Saturday, July 27 at 1 p.m., the Atlanta Silent Book Club will partner with the Atlanta Humane Society for a silent reading hour. They’ll be playing and spending time with various animals. No need to RSVP !

🏠 On Tues., July 30 at 6 p.m., the Margaret Mitchell House at Atlanta History Center Midtown hosts a panel discussion featuring experts discussing the history and cultural impact of the book and film, “Gone With the Wind.” Guests will have the opportunity to view the new exhibition “Telling Stories: Gone With the Wind and American Memory” before hearing from a panel of scholars and curators involved in creating the exhibition. Tickets are $20 for non-members of the Atlanta History Center and $15 for members .

⚾ On Wed., July 31 at 7:30 p.m., Howard Bryant will discuss his biography of one of baseball’s immortal figures, “The Last Hero: A Life of Henry Aaron,” at the Kennedy Theater at Atlanta History Center Midtown . This biography paints a portrait of Hank Aaron as a complicated, private man who through sports became an enduring icon. Hear the interesting, dynamic Howard Bryant talk about Aaron’s career. Tickets are $12 for non-members and $6 for members .

📚 On Tues., August 6 at 7 p.m., Atlanta author Mickey Dubrow talks about his gripping new novel, “Bulletproof” at the Lounge at Wild Heaven West End . This event is free and open to the public . A Capella Books will provide copies of the book for purchase at the venue.

🥘 On Thurs., Aug 8 at 7:30 p.m., Melissa Urban will talk about her book “The New Whole 30: The Definitive Plan to Transform Your Health, Habits, and Relationship with Food ” at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta . The book includes two different programs, each with its own guidelines, resources, and recipes: the Original Whole30 (for omnivores) and the Plant-Based Whole30 (for vegans, vegetarians, or anyone exploring a plant-based diet). Tickets are $37 and include a copy of the book .
