Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the Dunkin’ Joy in Childhood Foundation are treating teenage patients to a special summer camp experience. Campers will take part in their very own Dunkin’ Prom night, thanks to the Foundation’s $60,000 Dunkin’ Prom signature grant.

For participants, many of whom weren’t able to attend their school prom, these special nights provide a welcome distraction and an opportunity to celebrate and spend time with friends. The evening of festivities will include a photobooth with props, a DJ and a light up dance floor. As campers enter the dance they get to enjoy the huge neon balloon arch and bubble machines.

“Here at Children’s we recognize the unique challenges for teens who want to celebrate typical milestones, such as prom or summer camp,” said Abbie Doran, Children’s camp program coordinator. “It is so important for them to have normative experiences where they get to focus on developmentally appropriate things and have respite from focusing on their chronic illness. We are happy we were able to pull off our own version of the Dunkin’ Prom in a safe way for our patients and know this event will have a lasting impact for our attendees and community.”

This year marks five years since the first-ever Dunkin’ Prom in 2019. In that time, the Foundation has hosted nearly 60 events in conjunction with children’s hospitals around the country, with thirteen scheduled for 2024.

“Patients who are in the hospital dealing with health issues or undergoing treatment lose access to many of the simple joys that are easy to take for granted.  Our teen proms offer an opportunity to look forward to, and experience the joy of prom,” said Emilly Bartels, Dunkin’ Field Marketing Manager. “We are proud to collaborate with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to bring this special experience to the teen patients in around the city of Atlanta.”
