Fire damaged the Kodak building in Midtown Thursday morning, the second fire at the site on Ponce De Leon Avenue in two months.

The fire at the Kodak building at 300 Ponce De Leon Ave. was reported just before 8 a.m. on July 18. The building is next door to the original Atlanta Eagle building, an LGBTQ+ bar that was located at 306 Ponce De Leon Ave. for more than 30 years. Both buildings were heavily damaged by fire last month.

“The first unit reported heavy fire on the backside of the Kodak building and immediately went into a defensive mode of operation due to the building having already burned before,” said Atlanta Fire & Rescue spokesperson Anaré Holmes. “Command quickly to set up three ladders and was able to control the fire within 25 minutes and kept it from getting to the Atlanta Eagle side of the building.”

The Thursday fire did not appear to impact the Atlanta Eagle building, Holmes said. There were no injuries. Fire investigators are now trying to determine how the fire started.

The facades of the Kodak and Atlanta Eagle buildings have been designated as historic landmarks by the city. The Atlanta Eagle building is the city’s first LGBTQ+ landmark. However, the back portions of the buildings where the fires occurred are not city landmarks.
