Braves reportedly taking chance on All-Star to replace Ozzie Albies

The Atlanta Braves can't seem to catch a break injury-wise this season but reportedly made a move on Monday to help add more depth.

Atlanta was dealt a tough blow on Sunday as star infielder Ozzie Albies went down with a left wrist fracture and will miss about two months of action.

Losing Albies is devastating for a team that already has been dealing with a handful of other high-impact injuries. The Braves attempted to add more depth on Monday to help make up for the loss of Albies and reportedly signed three-time All-Star Whit Merrifield, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

"Superutilityman Whit Merrifield and the Atlanta Braves are in agreement on a major league deal, sources tell ESPN," Passan said. "Merrifield was released recently by Philadelphia. He’ll join the Braves today and help provide depth after the injury to All-Star second baseman Ozzie Albies."

Merrifield joined the Philadelphia Phillies ahead of the 2024 season after earning an All-Star nod with the Toronto Blue Jays last year. He didn't have the same level of success with the Phillies and was slashing .199/.277/.295 with three home runs, 11 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases in 53 games before being let go.

Hopefully, he is able to return to form with the Braves and can help fill the massive hole left by Albies. The Braves are expected to add at the upcoming trade deadline as they attempt to make a deep playoff run this year but these injuries are starting to become too much.
