ATLANTA ( KETK ) – The 2024 Summer Olympics officially start with the opening ceremonies on Friday and that’s a perfect reason to look back at ceremonies from years gone by.

In this From The Archives report, KETK’s former sports director Danny Elzner, previewed the opening ceremony for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.

At the prior opening ceremony in Barcelona, an archer spectacularly lit the final torch by shooting a flaming arrow across the night sky, a shot some were unsure would work at the time.

The Atlanta opening commemorated the 100th anniversary of the opening of first modern Olympics, America and the South, Elzner said.

For the 2024 Olympics, a former collegiate athlete from Stephen F. Austin State University helped carry the torch for part of it’s run.
