Jake Matthews: "I couldn't be happier with Matthew Bergeron"

The 2024-25 Atlanta Falcons had their first training camp practice yesterday, and after practice Mike Johnson and Beau Morgan got to talk to Mike Johnson’s former teammate and Falcons starting left tackle Jake Matthews. One of the things Jake talked about is how thrilled he is to have Matthew Bergeron back next to him this season.

“Yea you know personally I’ve had a few guys play guard next to me the last few years, and I couldn’t be happier with [Matthew] Bergeron man. His rookie year just did a great job, fits in great in the room, works hard, wants to do things the right way, so that’s been really good being back with him.” Matthews said.

Getting praise like that from a guy who’s been Mr. Reliable his whole career says a lot about Matthew Bergeron who not only played well last season as a rookie, but played well as a rookie at guard which was a new position for him after playing mostly tackle in college.

Matthews’ praise of Bergeron shows what kind of potential Bergeron has in the NFL, and it’s also one example of why the Falcons’ offensive line is in such a good place right now which Jake also talked about yesterday with Mike and Beau.

“We got a solid room, doesn’t mean anything is given to us, we gotta get back to work and earn it again and prove it again this year, but I think we’re in a good place.” Matthews said.

You could argue that the Falcons’ offensive line is the strongest unit on the team not only because the room is talented, but because of their continuity as well. They’re returning all five starters, and Offensive Line Coach Dwayne Ledford was retained by Raheem Morris as well. If Kirk Cousins ends up winning MVP, Comeback Player Of The Year, NFC Offensive Player Of The Year, or if the offense averages 30 points a game or something like that a lot of credit will need to go to what should be a very good Falcons offensive line.
