Days before United States Vice President Kamala Harris returns to Atlanta for a scheduled campaign stop, the city of East Point officially signed on to be a part of her presidential journey. The newest Harris for President campaign office was full of supporters on Friday afternoon as Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA), Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (WA) and East Point Mayor Deanna Holiday Ingraham all were on hand to speak with Harris and democratic supporters about the vice president’s chances of becoming one of the very few sitting vice presidents to become president.

If elected Harris can make history on many different levels.

Four sitting vice presidents have been elected president: John Adams in 1796, Thomas Jefferson in 1800, Martin Van Buren in 1836, and George H. W. Bush, Ronald Reagan’s second in charge, in 1988. Richard Nixon in 1968 and Joe Biden in 2020 are the only former vice presidents to make it back to the White House after serving roles their roles during previous administrations.

Though not one of metro Atlanta’s biggest cities, East Point has a majority Black population and a majority democratic voter block. Securing this city’s voters could go a long way to grabbing the 16 electoral votes Georgia has to offer.

“We cannot take this momentum for granted,” Mayor Ingraham said. “At local levels we can harness those relationships with voters. What we have to understand is that the power is in the vote.”

Robert Dawson, a Georgia state representative candidate that is running without opposition in District 65 was also at the East Point office in support of Harris.

“We’re here today to make it quite clear that Georgia is behind Vice President Harris,” he said. “DEI stands for Definitely Earned It.”

Jayapal made another appearance at the Voters of Tomorrow Summit in downtown Atlanta on Friday night. She spoke to dozens of young voters about Harris’ plans for the future of the Democratic Party. As an immigrant herself, Jayapal wanted to speak directly to that voter block about what the Trump/Vance campaign has said about the border and immigration.

“I am a proud immigrant, I came to the United States at the age of 16 years old. Today, I feel like I am here to pay it forward,” Jayapal said. She added that it will take Generation Z to win this election because it will be “nail-bitingly close.”

“It’s up to us to make sure voters know who Kamala Harris is and what she has done,” Jayapal said.

Harris is scheduled to join the Voters of Tomorrow Summit and deliver a virtual address this afternoon.
