Celebrating former President Jimmy Carter’s 100th birthday.

This morning, The Carter Center announced a very special celebration for his upcoming 100th birthday on October 1st, which will be an evening full of music at The Fox Theatre in Atlanta that will take place on September 17th.

Eric Church, War And Treaty, Maren Morris, Chuck Leavell, D-Nice, Drive-By Truckers, GROUPLOVE and ASO Chamber Chorus were announced a performers this morning.

Additional artists are still to be announced, and President Carter’s grandson, Jason Carter (also the chair of the Carter Center Board of Trustees), says he can’t think of a better way to celebrate his grandfather, who famously loved music and befriended many of the world’s most famous acts during his time as President (including Willie Nelson):

“Whether it was on his record player, on the campaign trail, or on the White House lawn, music has been – and continues to be – a source of joy, comfort, and inspiration for my grandfather.

I can think of no better way to celebrate him and his 100th birthday than a night of music.”

During Jimmy Carter’s successful 1976 presidential campaign, bands like the Allman Brothers rallied to support him, and Chuck Leavell, former keyboardist for the Allman Brothers and the Rolling Stones, says it’s “an honor” to play at this event:

“Back when Jimmy Carter was running for president, the Allman Brothers played concerts for his campaign because we believed in his vision for hope and change for America. We could never have imagined what a positive impact he would have on the entire world.

It’s an honor to play at his 100th birthday and celebrate a man whose legacy will surely continue to inspire future generations.”

The concert will benefit the Center’s “peace and health work around the world,” and each ticket costs $100, signifying the number of his 100th birthday:

“The Carter Center is celebrating President Carter’s upcoming 100th birthday with Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song, featuring live performances by world-class musicians.

Chuck Leavell, D-Nice, Drive-By Truckers, Eric Church, Maren Morris, GROUPLOVE, War And Treaty, the ASO Chamber Chorus, and more will perform. You can also expect appearances by famous friends and fans!

Willie Nelson Once Smoked A Joint On The Roof Of The White House With Jimmy Carter’s Son

A 2020 documentary dove into the the life and legacy of the 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter.

Titled Jimmy Carter: Rock & Roll President, the documentary chronicles former President Carter’s love of music, and his friendship with artists like Bob Dylan, Bono, Garth Brooks, Jimmy Buffett, among others. And it also features his Willie Nelson, who Carter called “one of his best friends.”

“Bob Dylan has been one of my best friends, along with Willie Nelson.”

If you haven’t seen it, it’s probably worth the watch, but the trailer alone also reveals confirmation of another badass piece of Willie Nelson history… the time he smoked weed on the White House roof.

Willie first revealed that he smoked at the White House back in his 1988 autobiography.

He was let on the roof by an “anonymous servant” at the White House, describing it as being up there with “a beer in one hand and a fat Austin Torpedo in the other.” Years later, in 2015, Willie confirmed that it was indeed President Carter’s son, Chip.

However in the new documentary, Jimmy Carter acknowledges it himself, almost as if he knew all along.

“When Willie Nelson wrote his autobiography he confessed that he smoked pot in the White House and he says that his companion was one of the servants at the White House… actually it was one of my sons.”

Willie Nelson is just the GOAT… that’s all there is to it.
