Strangers in Paradise, from the Ladybird team, transports guests to the beachside resorts of the late ‘80s
With the BeltLine running right behind it, Michael Lennox knew the concept would need to appeal to a daytime crowd, as well as evening. Called Strangers in Paradise, it transports guests back to the late 1980s and early 1990s, taking them to a resort bar, perhaps somewhere in South Florida. “We thought it’d be fun to play around with the resort drink universe, where people are trying to escape their day-to-day lives. These are juice-forward, colorful drinks,” he says. A love letter to WREK
You can learn a lot from local radio. Wherever I travel, I make a point of listening to nearby stations; when I relocated to Atlanta, it was the radio that taught me about my new city. One afternoon, escaping Buckhead in bumper-to-bumper traffic and fed up with Top 40 radio (How many personal-injury lawyers are out there, really? I wondered), I turned the dial and discovered my favorite gem of them all: WREK (91.1), Georgia Tech’s student-run radio station. The post A love letter to WREK appeared first on Atlanta Magazine.

Delbar founder invites Atlantans to Eden, a massive restaurant, speakeasy, and rooftop bar coming to Star Metals
Fares Kargar describes Eden as dark and moody with different vibes and offerings in each area. It’s inspired by pre-revolution Iran with European influences. A DJ will play nightly—their stage visible from nearly everywhere in the restaurant. Cocktails will play a large role, with 20 options in the dining room, another six or seven in the speakeasy, and 12 more on the roof. Some will include Iranian-style ingredients, such as cardamom and pistachios. Expect Old World and Mediterranean wines. Review: Breaker Breaker turns the BeltLine into a boardwalk
What I especially love about Breaker Breaker—besides the fried-fish platters with thick tartar sauce, the fun sandwiches, and the cocktails—is the location. Unlike most of the places constructed closer to Krog Street, there is nothing conventional about the architecture. It consists of linear-stacked concrete blocks, with a huge metal roof original to Stein Steel floating on top. Atlanta’s Silent Book Club chapter brings together readers, accountability, and camaraderie
If you’ve walked through Bold Monk Brewing, Ladybird, or other Atlanta hotspots recently, you might have noticed something unusual: a group of people independently reading in collective silence. Stumbling upon a Silent Book Club event might seem unnerving without context, but the meetup is an increasingly popular way for people to read, socialize, and explore Atlanta. How my mother’s clutter helped me get to know her better
This may sound odd, but as Mother’s Day approaches, I would like to offer a few words in support of pack rats—those governed by the impulse to squirrel away, in drawers and closets and under beds, the minutiae of one’s life. Yes, it can be done to excess. No doubt many of you, after emptying the home of a dead relative, have vowed never to bequeath that chore to those you leave behind. But decluttering can be insidious as well. The post How my mother’s clutter helped me get to know her better appeared first on Atlanta Magazine.

An Atlanta entrepreneur developed an app to empower people with disabilities
When Angad Sahgal was born with Down syndrome 23 years ago, doctors told his parents that he’d never be able to walk or talk. Assumptions like these vastly underestimate the abilities of those with Down syndrome. People with this genetic condition are congressional lobbyists, triathletes, actors, and much more. Sahgal himself is a college student and an entrepreneur: With his father, Amit Sahgal, he developed an app called Let Me Do It, named for the phrase he repeated often as a child. The innovative way the Georgia Aquarium manages millions of gallons of tank water
With around 500 species living in 60 different habitats, the Georgia Aquarium the biggest aquarium in the United States and the fourth largest in the world. Keeping the aquarium’s creatures healthy and happy is John Masson’s primary job responsibility, along with hundreds of other animal care specialists, from veterinarians to microbiologists. And because all those creatures are aquatic, whether partially or completely, a big part of Masson’s job involves water—a lot of water. With a tongue-in-cheek name, Floridaman is a dive bar set atop BeltLine seafood shack Breaker Breaker. Set to open this month, the adults-only spot features a relaxed vibe with low-brow beach drinks and a limited food menu. “It’s meant to be more chill, but very irreverent,” says general manager Hannah Keller. “It’s a hangout spot.” The post Floridaman, Breaker Breaker’s irreverent brother, debuts in May appeared first on Atlanta Magazine.
