Occasionally, you hear of a story that was never published in the newspaper. A few years ago, I had the honor of meeting Jeryl Sasser who has not only times to Atlanta, Texas but to pro sports.

Sasser’s family athletics history stretches back a ways and can still be seen in different sports at this point in time.

Sasser, an Atlanta High School alum, was inducted into the Trinty Valley Community College Hall of Fame back in 2021.

Sasser played two seasons (69-71) for the Cardinals in which he made the team via a tryout.

During those two seasons at Trinity Valley the Cards were 50-16. The team won a conference title with a 15-1 record and finished second the other year.

As a sophomore, he averaged 19.7 points and 10.3 rebounds, earning All-Region honors.

The next two seasons of Sasser’s career were at the University of North Texas. He averaged 11.8 points and 5.0 rebounds in his junior year.

At Atlanta High School, Sasser set the scoring and rebounding records but did not play as a junior, opting to perform with the band instead.

Sasser’s cousin Quentin plays pro golf, two of his sons were drafted and played in the NBA and another is a Dallas police officer. Sasser’s father, John, also played in the NBA.

His grandson, Marcus Sasser, had a solid career with the University of Houston and was picked 25th by the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round of the NBA draft in 2023.

Sasser was subsequently traded to the Detroit Pistons.
