ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — At least nine people are injured following a five-alarm fire Thursday morning in Atlantic City.

According to Fire Chief Scott Evans, it was just before 8 a.m. when fire crews responded to a fire at a rooming house on South Georgia Avenue. He says the fire spread to two neighboring buildings.

"The first arriving companies on the scene reported a heavy fire on the third floor where smoke and flames were showing," he said. "There were several injured people already in the streets, there were people hanging out of windows on the third and fourth floor."

Five people were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Two were seriously injured, according to Evans. One sustained burns, and the other he says jumped from a second-story window.

Four firefighters were also hurt, though their injuries were not life-threatening. Officials say at least 76 people have been displaced.

The blaze was placed under control just after 1 p.m.

Officials are still determining what caused the fire.
