City adopts fiber optic ordinances

The Atmore City Council adopted ordinances to grant a non-exclusive franchise to Southern Light LLC and Uniti Fiber Gulf Co. LLC to construct and maintain fiber optic transmission lines in the city during its regular meeting Monday.

The adopted ordinances – 03-2024 and 04-2024 – were adopted after resolution 2024-08 was adopted authorizing the same for the two fiber companies.

City Attorney Larry Wettermark said the resolutions granting the franchise agreements for both fiber companies include a five-year term; it’s renewable on a month-to-month basis; and the city receives 3 percent of the gross revenue from the fiber optic lines.

In other business, the city:

• adopted resolution 2024-07, authorizing a contract with Waste Pro Florida Inc., granting exclusive franchise for the collection of solid waste within the city and its disposals. During the city’s May 13 meeting, the council awarded the low bid to the solid waste company. According to Advance archives, Waste Pro is projected to begin collecting trash from residents in early July.

Regarding help with the transition, Street Department Superintendent Calvin Grace said the city would lend a helping hand to Waste Pro.

The city will provide each resident with a wheeled 95-96 gallon trashcan with a lid. Waste Pro will be delivering carts to residences July 1-6. The homes will be in uniform, and the cans will eliminate bags on the sidewalk and in makeshift receptacles, according to a release. The cans will also deter animals from getting in and tearing trash bags apart, spreading litter.

Each residence will receive an informational packet that details where and when to place the trashcan by the road. Garbage will be collected four days a week with each quadrant being a different collection day.

The city will continue to pick up garbage through Fri., July 5.

City officials encourage those who have bins already out for garbage to remove the bin once they receive their new cart.

• adopted resolution 2024-09, authorizing an agreement with the state of Alabama through the Alabama Department of Transportation for the installation, maintenance and/or landscaping for special directional signs. There will be 12 wayfinding signs placed along Highway 21 (seven), Highway 31 (three) and Jack Springs Road (two). The resolution is an agreement with ALDOT to main the areas around the signs; and,

• approved a request from Acapulco Mexican Restaurant to block off a portion of Presley Street and Church Streets for a July concert, which will last from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.
