Atmore man, Century, Fla. woman arrested July 15 on drug, probation revocation charges

An Atmore man and a Century, Fla. woman were arrested July 15 on drug and probation revocation charges, according to officials.

Atmore Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a release that Matthew Thomas, 37, of Atmore, was arrested and charged with unlawful possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana II and tampering with physical evidence.

McMann said Kelsey Taylor, 28, the passenger, was detained and officers learned that she was wanted by the Escambia County (Fla.) Sheriff’s office in reference to a probation revocation.

McMann said at approximately 12:30 a.m. on the day of the arrest, an APD officer out on routine patrol, observed a suspicious vehicle behind the Tavern on Highway 31.

“As the officer approached the vehicle, he detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and a male, later identified as Matthew Thomas, age 37, of Atmore, began walking away,” McMann said. “The officer noticed Thomas toss a plastic baggy away from him as he walked. The officer detained Thomas.”

McMann added that the officer contacted Taylor as well, and she was detained.
McMann said the baggy that was allegedly tossed to the side by Thomas contained more than 15 grams of a white crystal like substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine.

“Due to the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle the officers conducted a probable cause search,” he said. “The officers discovered over 2 grams of marijuana, a digital scale and a clear glass pipe with methamphetamine residue.”

Thomas and Taylor were then transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton. Taylor is awaiting extradition to Florida.
