The Winners of Local Color 2023
The 2023 Local Color Art Show and Sale, by the Working Artist Forum with the support of Plein Air Easton Competition and Arts Festival, was held on July 20 through July 23. The public was invited to attend the opening ceremony and award presentation that was very well attended. Judging had taken place prior to the opening by Charlie Hunter, 2022 Grand Prize winner at Plein Air Easton.

“16 Variations” Exhibit Opens at Trippe Gallery
“16 Variations: 1 Photograph, 16 Paintings” opens on July 14 at The Trippe Gallery in downtown Easton. This unique exhibition, “16 Variations: 1 Photograph, 16 Paintings,” will feature the work of 16 gallery artists. Following on the heels of the success of this exhibition in 2022, the idea for the exhibition developed from gallery owner and fine art photographer Nanny Trippe’s post on social media of a photograph of the high tide, sky full of clouds and Tred Avon River after a significant storm.
Photo Encaustics and an Anniversary
Main Street Gallery in Cambridge has lots to be excited about. The city’s only member-owned and operated co-op is turning 12 this summer and will celebrate with a champagne party on Second Saturday, August 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. This is a free event, and all are welcome to meet the artists. The gallery will also be celebrating its guest artist for the July/August exhibition, Karen Jury, a resident of Chester, whose show, “Creating Texture with Photo Encaustic,” will be on the walls for the celebration.

New Sculpture Installed at Sumner Hall
The Chestertown Public Art Committee is pleased to announce a new installation from the Peter and Hanna Woicke Sculpture collection at Sumner Hall in Chestertown. The sculpture, entitled “The Dance,” joins nine other sculptures from the Woicke Collection already installed at sites such as Henry Highland Garnet Elementary, the Kent County Public Library, and the Kent Cultural Alliance, with more to arrive in the coming months.
Denton Artsway Mainstreet Banner Program
The Denton Artsway Mainstreet Banner Program, which showcases local artistry and community spirit in Downtown Denton, is a joint effort between the Caroline County Council of Arts, the Town of Denton, and Downtown Denton Main Street. “Painting in the Moment” Exhibit
For the month of July, The Artists’ Gallery in Chestertown will feature paintings by Nancy R. Thomas in a show entitled “Painting in the Moment.” Painting from life requires moment by moment decision making. Light is constantly changing, and the artist has to commit at some point to the pattern of the shadows and what is important enough to include or be edited out. These decisions must be made in the heat of the moment, according to Nancy. It is the immediacy of plein air painting that she thoroughly enjoys. The show includes new work from recent plein air festivals as well as studio paintings from life.
Waterfowl Festival Featured Art Unveiled 2023
Esteemed sculptor Pati Stajcar is set to mesmerize art enthusiasts and festivalgoers with her latest masterpiece, “Aesop’s Fable,” a playful depiction of the timeless tale of the Crow and the Pitcher. The bronze will take center stage at the highly anticipated Waterfowl Festival in Easton on November 10 through 12. Pati’s stunning artwork serves as a visual representation of the Festival’s celebration of the region’s rich wildlife heritage.

Artist Unveils Original Artwork for Festival of Trees
Plans, currently underway for the 38th Festival of Trees, include the unveiling of this year’s official artwork by national award-winning artist Stephen Walker of Easton. Created to complement the 2023 theme, “Caroling, Caroling Through the Town,” Stephen’s vibrant oil painting features lovely evergreens and carolers heralding from the Victorian era.
Plein Air Easton 2023
Plein Air Easton, the largest and most prestigious outdoor art competition in the nation, is celebrating its 19th year in Easton this July 14 through 23. Plein Air Easton is a week-long art festival and competition. Fifty-eight artists from the world over are juried into the competition each year and will complete two competition artworks and one 6×8 artwork that will be judged for thousands of dollars in prizes. There are ticketed events, painting events where everyone can paint, free art exhibits showcasing the work that’s been completed during the week, lectures, painting demos, and even kid-friendly paint-outs, activities, and exhibits.
Short Attention Span Theatre
Presenting a diverse set of short plays ranging from the outrageous to the hilarious, this year’s edition of the Garfield Center’s Short Attention Span Theatre received over 1000 script submissions from local, national and international playwrights. SAST opens for live performances starting June 23rd. Produced by Mark Sullivan, and mounted in collaboration between a large cast and crew of local performers, directors and technicians, SAST will once again feature 8 ten-minute plays, some of which will be appearing on a stage for the first time.
