Drawing Inspiration from Everyday Images
National award-winning artist Stephen Walker of Easton has worked in five different mediums over his lifelong career. In his early days, Stephen was successful in 3-D design but found that printmaking, specifically serigraphy, was his niche. Fast forward to today, he is an oil painter who is influenced by the works of such masters as Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer, and contemporary painter, Patrick Lee. National artist Nancy Tankersley has personally inspired Stephen how to capture the landscape and people he has observed since moving to the Eastern Shore five years ago. Two of his oil paintings depicting local life have been selected for the new exhibition at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, Changing Chesapeake, which will be on display for the next year.

All submissions were sent anonymously to the juror who selected the list of artists for the year. The juror also selected a “featured image” to be the subject of the poster and is the honored “Featured Artist.” The competition was steep this year with many submissions for the small show kept to 36 artists. The OCC configures its gallery space to accommodate that limited number.

“Prescription: Murder” Opens
The Garfield Center for the Arts opens its second production of the 2023 season with Richard Levinson and William Link’s mystery “Prescription: Murder.”. The play premiered in 1962 at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco. It was written with the intent that its headlining character was the play’s main antagonist, Dr. Roy Flemming. But as the play toured the country, it was a secondary character that began to capture audiences’ attention. The character was the detective, Lieutenant Columbo. As Columbo gradually became the main attraction, the character’s eventual popularity was assured and Columbo eventually graduated to leading man television status as portrayed by the great Peter Falk. The play never made it to Broadway, as the actor who originated the role of Columbo, Thomas Mitchell, became ill and passed away, but the original production boasted some heavyweight Hollywood talent, with Agnes Moorehead as Claire Fleming and Joseph Cotton as Dr. Fleming.
