Establishing Light in Painting Workshop
Studio B Art Gallery is sponsoring a workshop “Establishing Light in Painting” with Daniel Robbins at the Academy Art Museum in May. This workshop will focus on the process of establishing light and luminosity in painting. Light is something that must be built into a painting using an indirect method: multiple layers of paint to create a complex optical effect. Direct painting – also referred to as alla prima or premier coup painting – does not suffice when light is the focus of the piece. Because of this, the workshop will focus on the process and application of painting in layers using the indirect method. The proper use of the materials for achievability will be discussed in addition to impasto, glaze, and scumble techniques. Acrylic paint or a fast drying oil medium will be used to insure that the layers of paint are dry enough to add additional layers of paint on the following days.

“Moments of Joy” Exhibit
Bonnie Howell is the artist of the month at The Artists’ Gallery in Chestertown during November. She explains how the exhibit came to be, “Several years ago, I named a painting ‘Moment of Joy’ and realized recently that the whole experience of paddling on the beautiful creeks and rivers of the Eastern Shore created many such moments. When we view water literally, from land or boat, or even just look at pictures of water, it has the potential, the power, to move our emotions in a pleasurable way.” So, “Moments of Joy” became the theme of this year’s new body of oil paintings for Bonnie’s November feature show.
