School District Sues Gov. Newsom Over New Gender Identity Law
Last week, the Chino Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) and a group of parents were in a legal battle with the state. The southern California school district sued Gov. Gavin Newsom over Assembly Bill 1955, a law that bans educators from notifying parents about their child’s gender identity. The law aims to protect transgender students against being forced to “come out” to their parents against their will. However, parents and school board members in Chino Valley argue that the law violates the parent’s rights under the United States Constitution.

A California teen is reportedly missing after riding her bike to visit family last week. According to a news release from the City of Monterey Park on Facebook, Alison Jillian Chao, 15, “left her residence on July 16, 2024, at approximately 5:32 p.m. Video footage shows Alison’s last known whereabouts on July 16 at 6:23 p.m.”

Black woman dies in California prison from heat over 110 degrees
A 42-year-old Black woman, Adrienne Boulware, has died in the custody of the California Department of Corrections at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla. On July 4, prison guards exposed Boulware to extreme temperatures outdoors during a heatwave for 15 minutes, leaving her with just a small glass of water in the over 110 F heat. Boulware began to exhibit symptoms of heat exhaustion almost immediately after returning indoors. Two days later, she passed away while receiving medical care. Early Friday morning, an allegedly stolen vehicle led Ceres and Turlock police on a chase that spilled through the streets of the Ceres area and involved dangerous maneuvers, ultimately ending with an arrest. Ceres Police Department reported the pursuit initiated when Officer Lord-Huff located the vehicle at approximately 05:17am near E Hatch Rd and Mitchell Rd. After an attempted traffic stop, the suspect attempted to evade police, setting off a pursuit, as per Ceres Police Department's Facebook post.
