Wichita couple spreads joy by fixing, donating bicycles
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Every couple of weeks, the Stephens family makes a special delivery. The couple works as a one-stop bike shop, giving away bikes to kids who need them and repairing the ones they already have. It all began when Earl Stephens saw a little boy in need.
Love, Kansas initiative has Hutch as pilot community
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Commerce launched an initiative called Love, Kansas at an event in Manhattan on Monday. "It really came out of the recognition that our department of commerce had done some work to see, I think 79 of the 105 counties in Kansas have lost population since 2020," said Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel. "That's just a downward trend that we have to battle every day as we're losing population. How do we get then people to go into jobs? Really at the grassroots level, ask people who live here, who have graduated from here to reach out to their past classmates that maybe have moved away from Kansas and invite them to come back and tell them the good things happening here and why they might want to consider moving back to Kansas. That really is a grassroots effort, but they have asked several pilot communities across the state to be a part of it."
Fast: Woodie Seat will be open for awhile
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Mayor Greg Fast noted that though phase one of the Woodie Seat project is done, there will be more to do in the coming years. "It is open, it does look like we've done something," Fast said. "It's beautiful, smooth, striped perfectly, some of the medians are taken out or shaved down. That was phase one that we worked with the county with a combined grant from the state to help pay for a lot of that."

Severe storms bring winds, damage to Wichita area
A line of severe thunderstorms moved across south central Kansas late Tuesday afternoon, bringing wind gusts of 65 miles an hour, bringing down trees and power lines. The storms developed in Kingman and Harper counties and then moved east into Reno, Harvey, Sedgwick, Sumner, Butler and Cowley counties. Wind gusts of 60 to 65 mph were reported near Eisenhower National Airport, and a gust of 67 mph was reported near Viola.
