The AAU basketball season has come to a close. Coaches have returned to their college campuses and prospects are back home getting some well-deserved rest and relaxation.

Now we move on to the next step in the recruiting process and that’s scheduling official visits for the prospects in the Class of 2025. A few things have changed in recent years that need to be pointed out in the recruiting process.

First, the days of just five official visits are over. Now prospects can essentially take as many official visits as they want. Some prospects are trying to limit their visits and others are frankly open to be out on an official visit just about every weekend.

Second, what prospects are looking for has changed. Once upon a time it was good facilities and stability within a program that mattered. These days, for some, it’s about how much the program has in their NIL Collective and what’s the path to playing time, probably in that order.

One other thing that comes up as well is will the coach hit the transfer portal at their position. Basically, coaches who have a portal reputation are going to hear from high school prospects about their shopping habits.

With all that said, Fran McCaffery recently met with the media and suggested that there were two positions of need. He would like to add a big man in the Class of 2025 and also a couple of wing prospects.

Something to note is coming out of the House vs. NCAA decision the limit on scholarships for men’s college basketball is going up from 13 to 15. But, that might not official happen for another recruiting cycle to don’t expect Iowa to get to 15 scholarships this year. Iowa likely keep at least one scholarship open after the fall signing period to use during the spring transfer portal period.

Now let’s get down to talking about the prospects.

First, let’s start with the guards and wing forwards. Iowa has four visitors already set up and one more to likely making his way to campus this fall from the Class of 2025.

In the shooting guard category there are a pair of players.

Four star shooting guard Mazi Mosley leads the way. He has a dynamic skill set. Terrific scorer of the ball, but also very efficient in setting up his teammates for scoring opportunities. Mosely will be visiting Iowa the weekend of September 14 th . He also has trips to Michigan and LSU scheduled the two weekends before seeing Iowa City. Mosley is also slated to visit Kansas, but that date has not been finalized.

The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) has Iowa at 36.4%, LSU at 31.9%, and Michigan at 27.3%.

The other shooting guard is three star prospect Simon Walker from Huntsville, AL. He is an excellent outside shooter and has become a good ball-handler and passer in the last year, meaning he could become a combo guard at the next level. The 6-foot-4 guard has an Iowa visit set up for September 7 th . He will also be visiting Auburn, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Clemson, Virginia Tech, and Butler.

The On3 RPM has Auburn at 48.5% and Iowa at 42.5%. Iowa is probably a little artificially high here due to the fact that the other visit dates were not in the database at this point.

At the small forward position, Iowa has a pair of visitors coming up in late August and early September with one other prospect still to schedule an official visit.

Four star prospect Ryder Frost will be one of the first visitors this fall. He is coming in the weekend of August 31 st . Frost will also see Wisconsin in the middle of September and already visit Syracuse. The expectation is that Frost will also visit Notre Dame, who is going to be one of his top schools.

The On3 RPM has Syracuse as his favorite at 33.4% with Wisconsin up next at 29.3%. Iowa sits third at 25.1%.

The next weekend, the Hawkeyes are slated to host small forward Chase Thompson from Minnesota. He stands 6-foot-8 and is a skilled wing player. Thompson will be at Iowa September 7 th and is expected to visit West Virginia and Nebraska as well.

The On3 RPM has Iowa at 52.7% and West Virginia at 46.1%.

One other player to watch at this position is Winters Grady a four star from Oregon. The Ducks are the current favorites according to the On3 RPM.

Let’s now move over to the frontcourt where it’s a crowded race, which means that perhaps Fran McCaffery is thinking about adding two players or they feel like they need a lot of options to land one strong player.

First, let’s throw out a pair of big men who have visited in the past and are still considering Iowa. One is four star power forward Trent Sisley from Indiana. He has Iowa in his final five, but it’s likely he is headed elsewhere.

Also, four star center Eric Reibe has Iowa in his top 11, which is great. But, the reality is he’s becoming less likely to be a future Hawkeye since the blue bloods are now involved.

One other player that hasn’t scheduled an official visit yet, but is an interesting player is three star Marcus Jackson . He is a bouncy forward who told us earlier this month that he plans to visit Iowa right after the Hawkeyes offered.

The weekend of September 14 th will be a busy one for the Hawkeyes as far as frontcourt official visitors. Slated to be on campus that weekend are a pair of four star prospects in A’mare Bynam from Omaha and Matt Gilhool from Pennsylvania.

Let’s start with Bynam, who is making his second official visit to Iowa. He is also going to see Nebraska the week before, followed by Colorado, and LSU, and then wrap up with a trip to Ohio State. The Huskers, who has visited quite a bit, has the RPM edge at 41.1%. Iowa sits at 18%

Next up is Matt Gilhool from Pennsylvania. The 6-foot-10 forward has already visited Syracuse last year, but he is no longer considering the Orange. He will make visits three straight weeks, starting with Georgia Tech and LSU and wrapping up with Iowa. The RPM is still showing Syracuse as a favorite, but with them out of the mix it will be a tight race between Tech, LSU, and Iowa.

A fast rising prospect will be visiting in late August. That prospect is four star forward Brady Koehler from Indiana. He has a trip to Northwestern coming up this weekend. Then Iowa on August 31 st with Notre Dame the following weekend. Then he will be off to Wake Forest and wrap up the final weekend of September at Virginia Tech. Right now the Irish and the Wildcats might be slight favorites. ND is at 25%, Northwestern at 21.9%, and Iowa at 18.8% according to the On3 RPM.

Then the next visitors won’t happen until the middle of October. Speaking of fast rising prospect, few have risen as much as Tommy Ahneman from North Dakota and now moving to Minneapolis. That might end up being a tell about this potential college plans. He will visit Notre Dame in early September and then head to Wisconsin the following week. Nebraska will be up the next week and then a break before seeing Minnesota the first weekend of October and Iowa the following week. Gophers are his top choice according to the RPM at 28.1% and Nebraska at 24.6%. Iowa is at 16% and Wisconsin at 13.3%.

Finally there is a late October visit from power forward Dezmon Briscoe from Indianapolis. The 6-foot-9 forward has four visits set up with others potentially happening. His main visits won’t happen until October when he visits DePaul, Cincinnati, and Iowa, which happens on the 25 th . The On3 RPM has Cincy up front at 29.5%, followed by DePaul at 25.8%, and Iowa at 22.1%.

That’s where everything stands right now. It’s going to be an interesting fall from a basketball recruiting perspective. It will be interesting to see how many make a large number of visits and how quickly the dominoes start to fall.
