AUBURN — The search for a missing 12-year-old boy on a cold January night had a positive outcome. On Thursday, those who helped craft the successful story were honored in a ceremony at the police station.
“These officers and dispatchers worked together to swiftly put an end to this family’s worst nightmare,” said Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.
Thirteen Auburn police officers and dispatchers were recognized by the district attorney. Also getting accolades was Biza, the department's police dog.

At 10:30 p.m. the night of Jan. 31, police got a call from the child's mother reporting that the young teen had left home on foot sometime after 8:30 p.m. The temperature was about 30 degrees, and the child was not wearing a winter coat, only a hooded sweatshirt, authorities said.
Biza tracked for more than 2 miles, leading officers to an area where evidence showed that the adolescent had been present. Officers converged on the area, soon locating the missing youth. It was about 1 a.m.. He was examined at a local hospital before returning home.
The group received the District Attorney's Team Excellence and Merit (TEAM) Award. Those honored were Sgt. Mike Tarckini, Detective Tyler Bresse and Officers Brandyn Geldart, Randy Hawley, Matt Laskes, Dave Ljunggren, John McLaughlin and Jordan Ryan. Dispatchers recognized were Alex Cortese, Carrie Girardin, Madison Hamill, Brianna Parker and Luke Snay. Biza received a chew toy for her efforts.
“This call spanned two shifts and showed an unbelievable amount of coordination,” said Auburn Police Chief Todd Lemon. “This was an incredible show of teamwork, and we are proud to recognize all of these members of the Auburn Police Department.”
