The Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan is ready to embrace his birthmark after years of hiding

Over the long weekend, frontman Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins decided to show off the birthmark on his arm, which he’s kept hidden from sight for years, in an effort to shine a bit of light on body positivity.

Corgan , 57, displayed what is called a “port wine” birthmark on his left forearm in an Instagram post on Monday, September 2, while asking his followers to "find peace with who you are."

"I'm a fan of body positivity movements because at the end of the day it is about celebrating what makes us ‘us,'” Billy said in the caption of his short slideshow, which also featured an image of model Carlotta Bertotti , describing her as a “beautiful young woman with a birthmark who has embraced her 'difference' with grace."

"My point being that my whole life I've endeavoured to hide my 'port wine' birthmarks,” he adds, “because as you can imagine I was teased unmercifully about them as a child. So much so that people who have known me for a decade are shocked when they finally 'see it.' And even now strangers will stop me on the street not because they recognize me but because they think something is wrong with me that requires medical attention."

Rest assured, although these types of birthmarks usually get darker and thicker over time, they are generally harmless.

Ending his post on a positive note, The Smashing Pumpkins ’ frontman implores viewers who can relate, “I hope you find peace with who you are because: I would like to know that person and no one else."

Billy and his wife, Chloé Mendel Corgan , recently revealed they are expecting their third child together, telling People on August 28, "We are overjoyed to announce that our family is growing! It's an exciting time for us, although unexpected."

The new addition, he says, went over adorably when the couple told their other children the news. "On Sunday, we shared the news with our children, Augustus Juppiter and Philomena Clementine. While Augustus was overjoyed, Clementine, the younger of the two, asked if the baby was made already and shed a few tears of concern, which was honestly adorable."
