Lambert reminisced on those times as she recently appeared as a guest on The Great Creators Podcast with Guy Raz. During their conversation, Lambert dove deep into the details of her music career from creating a choir at her high school to playing Honky Tonks in early adulthood and even participating on the singing competition show, Nashville Star, which ultimately led her to a record deal with Epic Records — a division of Sony — in September 2003.

Following her signing with Epic Records, Lambert released her album, Kerosene , debuted at #1 on the charts and set her up to tour with Country star, Keith Urban . It’s there where the now 40-year-old says she learned a new level of performance, musicianship, and entertainment.

“I was fresh out of Honky Tonk U [University] right onto Keith Urban’s stage and I was like, ‘Oh, this is a whole different ballgame,'” Lambert shared. “This ain’t no beer joint band. This is legit musicianship and entertainment value.”

She continued, “My band and I sat out there every night and watched the show. It was a whole different level, it was like getting your Masters. I was like, ‘OK, this is your next level of schooling. Go to school, we need to learn.’” She added, “We were a good band, but we were a bar band and there’s some beauty to that, but we were now on a major label, with a #1 record and we needed to step it up and take it more seriously.”

Taking notes on everything from Keith’s stage presence to the showmanship of his band and even how things ran backstage helped Miranda set up her own success and just a few years later, she kicked off her very first headlining, Roadside Bars and Pink Guitars tour.

“I think watching how insanely talented Keith’s band is, how smoothly the backstage operated and how the crowd resonated with his banter and his entertainment value… there was so many notes that I was taking there on that tour for sure because it was the first of many major tours that I would go on.”
