Des Moines woman wins $500,000 Iowa Lottery prize
DES MOINES, Iowa — Is this heaven? No, it's Iowa. But for one recent Iowa Lottery winner, the two may as well be one in the same. Melissa Runnels of Des Moines took home a $500,000 prize, the 11th top prize in the Iowa Lottery's "$500,000 CA$H" scratch game. She purchased her winning ticket at Git N Go (1307 Army Post Rd.) in Des Moines.

The Des Moines Register is there as Gov. Robert Ray returns from an October 1979 visit to Southeast Asia, where he toured refugee camps in Thailand. "I watched people die," Ray tells the Register for the Oct. 30 edition, saying the conditions were so horrific he doesn't know how to describe them. The Republican governor, who had so far resettled 4,000 refugees from the Vietnam War to Iowa, acknowledges backlash for his efforts, "but this is a matter of life and death." Ray, joined by Iowa leaders including Register President and Editor Michael Gartner, forms the Iowa SHARES charity, which raises hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy food and other aid to assist the refugees in Thailand.
Des Moines' Bethel A.M.E. Church celebrates 115 years with reunion spanning generations
DES MOINES, Iowa — A church that says it's the oldest historical Black church on Des Moines' east side is celebrating a major anniversary. Bethel African Methodist Espiscopal Church, led by Pastor Josephine Wolder, is 115 years old. Over the weekend, it celebrated the momentous occasion with special events. On Saturday, there was a Praise Team Dance Celebration featuring teams from a dozen historic Black churches in Des Moines. A worship celebration was held Sunday with a special reunion choir featuring current and past Bethel A.M.E. members.

BRANDON, S.D. (July 19) — Somehow, someway, Mike Marlar finished sixth in Sunday’s Silver Dollar Nationals at Huset’s Speedway on the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. All five races on the Lucas Oil Series this week at Eagle (Neb.) Raceway; Shelby County Speedway in Harlan, Iowa, and Huset’s saw the Winfield, Tenn., veteran get caught up someone else’s mess. Jaidyn Sellers Makes All District Softball Team
In her final season with the Panorama Panthers, Jaidyn Sellers claims her place on the Class 2A Southwest All District team for softball. Sellers was a member of the Panther softball team for five years, and was the hit leader as an 8th grader with 25 hits while playing at the varsity level for the first time. Jaidyn would transform into a leader and vital member of the Panther softball team during her five year career.

RAGBRAI rides through Glenwood, Red Oak
(Red Oak) -- Cyclists from across the country and the globe began the over 460-mile trek of RAGBRAI Sunday. After kicking off with an expo in Glenwood Saturday, tens of thousands of cyclists made their way across Mills County and began filing into Red Oak Sunday afternoon and evening for the 51st Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. Tents, trailers, and trucks packed into the Red Oak Junior-Senior High and Inman Elementary grounds, public parks, and host family's yards and homes. KMA News had a chance to catch up with some riders, including first-timers such as Al West from northwest Missouri. A veteran cyclist, West says he has usually preferred riding solo or with smaller groups. But, he says the first day went well in the jam-packed event.

Creston police report pair of early Monday morning drug arrests
(Creston) -- A pair of Creston suspects face drug charges following their arrests in separate incidents early Monday morning. The Creston Police Department says 44-year-old Ronnee Colleen Abel of Creston was arrested shortly after 1 a.m. for possession of a controlled substance, non-marijuana, 3rd offense, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Authorities say the arrest occurred in the 500 block of West Adams Street.
