AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) - A missing person was found dead in Weyers Cave after a joint search led by the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office and Staunton Police Department. The ACSO and SPD discovered the missing person Friday night in the 700 block of Keezletown Road and identified the body as Gregory Andrew Merritt, 24, from Staunton, according to an ACSO press release shared Tuesday. Local law enforcement received assistance from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management’s cadaver K-9 units to help find Merritt in the large search area amid thick vegetation, according to the release.

Thunderstorms down trees and power lines
ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA – (ROCKTOWN NOW) – A cold front moving into the Shenandoah Valley was responsible for a line of thunderstorms, that downed trees and power lines in parts of Rockingham and Augusta County as well as the city of Harrisonburg. A lighting strike lead to a tree fire near the Coors plant in Elkton and split a tree in half in the town of Elkton. Trees were down across several roads, including Spaders Church Road and Dices Spring Road in Weyers Cave. Power lines were down in parts of Eastern Rockingham County, on main street in Harrisonburg and parts of Augusta County as well. The storm also brought some much needed rainfall to parts of the area with a quarter to three quarters of an inch reported by automated rain gauges.
