AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Many people strolling around downtown Augusta on Monday were still wrapping their heads around the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday  – saying there needs to be a change.

“Our world is being separated, our country is being separated. We just need to come back together, that’s the bottom line,” said Randy Malikowski. “They’re separating us, there are people in charge that are way above all of us.”

Many said violence isn’t the answer, especially when it results in innocent lives lost.

“I don’t feel like he deserved to be shot at,” said Shaunda Jones. “I don’t think it was right.”

Some others said Donald Trump’s actions or words may have incited this.

“The hate that he brought to the White House, the hate that he brings to him personally, or like the words he say, on both sides that where some people say ‘oh, he deserved it,’” said Moe Love. “But, if you actually looked at his viewpoints and actually what he brought to the White House while he was in office, it helped us not hindered us.”

Others are calling for more security measures for presidents and presidential candidates, but some said incidents like this come with the territory.

“Anything that’s significant right now that has to do with a position of power or just any kind of situation that’s competitive, it’s always high stakes,” said Ron T. “So, if you’re willing to put yourself on the line for that, then if you win it, you deserve it.”

The main consensus: the country is extremely divided right now and an event like this can either bring us back together, or pull us further apart.

“Long as people have that positive mindset to try to build that unity no matter which party, democratic or republic,” Jones said. “As long as people come together for a good cause in the community. I feel like we can, but we need people to have that positive mindset.”

The FBI continues to investigate the assassination attempt. Former president Donald Trump is expected to speak at the Republican National Convention Thursday.
