Richmond County School System's rightsizing plan is already underway.

The school district's spokesperson Haley Lacuesta last week confirmed that Belair Middle School students will start the school year in the defunct Langford Middle School building. They will call it home until a new middle school can be built for the Belair students.

Langford closed at the end of the last school year with their students slated to learn at Tutt until a new Langford Middle could be built. The Belair K-8 building will now only serve as an elementary school. These moves are all part of a detailed rightsizing plan which includes multiple new schools, closing old schools, and moving student bodies around. The school board approved the first phase in March with more phases on the way.

“Our priority is for students and staff to have a stable and focused learning environment," said Richmond County Superintendent Kenneth Bradshaw. "Our transportation, maintenance, and school nutrition departments have worked tirelessly this summer to ensure a smooth transition for our students. Belair Middle School faculty and staff are excited to welcome families.”

A family information meeting is planned at 6 p.m. July 22 at Belair Elementary School in Augusta at 3925 Harper Franklin Ave. A livestream link will be available on the district website at rcboe.org. There will be an open house noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 2 at Langford in Augusta at 3019 Walton Way.

The first day for RCSS elementary schools is Aug. 5, while the middle, high, magnet, and K-8 schools will open on Aug. 6.
