AUGUSTA, GA. (WJBF) – The Augusta Jewish Museum held its ribbon cutting today downtown on Telfair Street.

The Museum was founded in 2015 by Jack Steinberg. In 2021, they got deeds to both buildings on Telfair Street, and that is when the exhibit planning started.

The Museum is part of the synagogue downtown, which is the Oldest Synagogue in the state of Georgia. Organizers hope to show parts of history to people in the area.

“I want people to come. What’s in there is not anything; it’s like the Jewish traditions that we follow. Its showing things that people don’t really understand, and that’s the important thing. Doesn’t have to be Jewish it’s a matter of people understanding the different things that you can learn that you had no idea,” said Jack Weinstein, President of Augusta Jewish Museum.

The Museum has many exhibits, some being contributions of the Jews in the Aiken/Augusta area, Jewish Traditions and Practice, Remembering the Holocaust, and Israel the Land and its People.

“We are incredibly proud of this project and how its grown, and we are incredibly grateful to the city of Augusta and all of our supporters,” said Angela Russo, Museum Manager.

They are working on phase two and three of their capital campaign to work on the synagogue.

Starting August, the Museum will be open Friday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. For more information about tours and history, visit their website .
