If you're a fan of Big Lots, you may want to visit them sooner rather than later.

In a filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission , the retail chain announced it would close 35 to 40 stores across the U.S. while opening three new ones. While they did not name specific locations, the Thomson and Aiken locations have indicated they are closing on their store directory pages. There are storewide sales of up to 20% at the closing stores.

The Augusta, Evans, Waynesboro, and North Augusta locations have not indicated they are closing as of Wednesday.

Big Lots has been a popular choice for discounted furniture, decor, gadgets, and other retail products. However, the chain suffered a sales drop of 10.2% between the first quarters of 2023 and 2024, equating to a loss of about $114.5 million. The number of operating stores went down from 1,425 to 1,392 during this time as well. In its filing, the company said it has "substantial doubt" about its ability to continue operation, leading to speculation of a potential bankruptcy filing.

It joins a list of nationwide chains that are closing locations due to worrisome finances, including Hooters and Red Lobster which also announced closures this summer.
