A pair of national home goods retailers filing for bankruptcy are closing their stores in Augusta and Columbia County.

Conn's Home Plus acquired competitor Badcock Home Furniture & More in December 2023, but earlier this month the combined retail entity began Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, according to numerous media and trade publications this week.

Slated for closure are the Badcock at 5107 Wrightsboro Rd. in Grovetown; and the Conn's at 596 Bobby Jones Expy. in Augusta.

In addition to Grovetown, Badcocks in Cedartown, Marietta, Lawrenceville and Toccoa also are closing, according to a curated list on Badcock's website .

A similar list on Conn's website shows stores in Columbus, Douglasville, Fayetteville, Newnan and Stone Mountain on the closure list.

Are more closing? Other media outlets are reporting that all Badcocks locations nationally are slated to close. The Athens Banner-Herald, part of the USA Today network, spoke with employees at Badcock locations in the Athens area who said their stores also are shutting down.

“It’s hard to say, but the Badcock name will be pretty much gone,” Tim Mullen, manager of the store in Toccoa, said Friday.

Store employees in Athens were notified Thursday by e-mail that the stores would close, according to employees. Badcock stores will remain open until about Oct. 31 for liquidation sales, Badcock announced on its website.

An automated message Friday afternoon told callers to the Badcock store at 3241 Washington Rd. in Augusta that "no one is available" to answer calls. Repeated calls to North Augusta's Badcock at 406 E Martintown Rd.; Aiken's Badcock at 3609 Richland Ave. W.; and to Thomson's Badcock at 683 Main St. rang unanswered Friday afternoon.

This is a developing story. Return to this page for updates.
