A Maine man who allegedly tried to run down a town constable with his vehicle in Sullivan County last week is now facing charges, including attempted murder of a peace officer.

New York State Police said Paul Gosselin, 63, of Augusta, Maine, was arraigned Tuesday in Town of Fallsburg Justice Court on charges of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer, aggravated assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon and first-degree assault, all felonies; and resisting arrest, second-degree obstructing governmental administration and third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, all misdemeanors.

He was sent without bail to the Sullivan County jail, pending further court action.

State police first encountered Gosselin at about 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2, when they responded to a report of a suspicious subject in a vehicle at a business on Route 97 in Barryville.

The subject, later identified as Gosselin, said he had a gun and he would shoot the troopers, state police said.

Gosselin fled to a secondary business on Route 97, where he got out of the vehicle, then got back into the vehicle and began to drive in the direction of a Town of Lumberland constable who was on foot nearby.

A trooper at the scene observed the vehicle allegedly accelerating toward the constable and fired several rounds, striking Gosselin one time.

Troopers gave first aid to Gosselin, and then an emergency medical services crew took him to an area hospital. No charges were filed at that time.

The name of Gosselin's attorney was not immediately available.
