Today is Sept. 6, 2024. And on this date in Texas history, a Longhorn linebacker set a position record during a 1997 game against Rutgers.

As Texas opened its 1997 campaign with a 48-14 win, Aaron Humphrey had six tackles, three interceptions, two quarterback hurries and a pass breakup that was actually a dropped fourth interception. Those three interceptions remain a single-game record for Texas linebackers. Then a sophomore, Humphrey was making his first career start at middle linebacker.

"I never even had one in a game before. (Three interceptions) was something I never could have imagined," Humphrey told reporters afterwards.

Humphrey did not intercept another pass in 1997, but he still led the Longhorns in that statistic while also producing a team-high 12 tackles for a loss. Texas finished that season with a 4-7 record.
