Why is there a dispute between DirecTV and Disney?

Millions of DirecTV customers have been blocked from accessing all Walt Disney Co. networks since Saturday, as the dispute between the two companies continues.

ESPN and other channels were pulled from DirecTV just as the U.S. Open was underway and college football season was kicking off this past weekend.

At the heart of the dispute is the negotiation of a new content carriage contract. Since an agreement was not reached, ESPN, the Disney Channel, and other Disney-owned networks became unavailable to millions of homes.

Other channels removed from DirecTV include ESPN2, ESPN Deportes, ESPNU, ESPN News, ACC Network, SEC Network, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, FX, FX Movie Channel, FXX, Freeform, National Geographic, Nat Geo Wild, Nat Geo Mundo, and BabyTV, according to Phil Swann, publisher of The TV Answer Man website.

As compensation for cutting the broadcasts, DirecTV says its customers can get a $20 credit for the blackout, but will have to take a few steps to qualify for the credit. Subscribers should visit: https://www.directv.com/tvpromise/ for the credit.

Reporters Chris Sims and Jim Sergent of the Louisville Courier-Journal contributed to this story.
