NHC is tracking another system where Hurricane Helene formed. Could this one hit Texas?

By Brandi D. Addison, USA TODAY NETWORK,

After Hurricane Helene devastated the southeastern U.S. , causing dozens of deaths and leaving millions without power in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina, two new storms and two disturbances have developed in the Atlantic.

The storms hit as forecasters warn of the potential for a record-breaking hurricane season with 17 to 24 named storms to form — of which eight to 13 will spin up into hurricanes. An average year sees 14 named storms, of which seven are hurricanes.

    • Hurricane Isaac : The storm will linger in the Atlantic and is expected to dissipate into a post-tropical cyclone on Monday. There is no major direct threat, although the storm could generate life-threatening surf and rip currents on nearby islands, most prominently the Azores.
    • Tropical Storm Joyce : The storm poses no threat to the U.S. or any islands. It is expected to dissipate in the Atlantic on Tuesday.
    • Disturbance 1 : A tropical wave with disorganized showers and thunderstorms has a 20% chance of developing in the next 48 hours and a 60% chance of developing in the next week as it moves across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic.
    • Disturbance 2 : An area of low pressure over the western Caribbean Sea has a 0% chance of developing in the next 48 hours and a 40% chance of developing into a tropical depression during the middle to latter part of next week as it enters the Gulf of Mexico.
