Tornadic supercells have already begun forming in Florida's southern peninsula as Hurricane Milton, now a Category 4, approaches landfall tonight as an " extremely life-threatening " storm.

Earlier this week, Milton strengthened to a Category 5 , with some speculating it could become the first-ever Category 6. However, it has since weakened to a Category 4.

Despite the downgrade, forecasters warn of widespread impacts, including life-threatening storm surges exceeding 15 feet in some areas, heavy rainfall of over 12 inches, and sustained winds up to 90 mph.

This comes on the heels of Hurricane Helene, which devastated the southeastern U.S. less than two weeks ago, killing over 200 people in the Appalachians. Now, a new disturbance is likely to develop into Tropical Storm Nadine later today.

Where will Hurricane Milton make landfall?

Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall in the Manatee County/Sarasota County area on central Florida's west coast, give or take 50 miles north or south, according to Davis, who also advised people not to concentrate on where it could make landfall.

"We're telling people not to focus on the exact center because as the system makes landfall, the eye is going to be getting larger, and the wind field is going to be expanding," said Rick Davis, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Tampa. "Even if you're not directly in the path, the effects will be felt far and wide at the point of landfall."

What's the latest on all systems in the Atlantic?

There are currently four storms developing in the Atlantic. Here's the latest on all:

    • Hurricane Milton: Tornadic supercells from the Category 4 Hurricane Milton are beginning to sweep across the southern Florida peninsula. The time to prepare, including evacuation if instructed, is quickly coming to an end along the Florida west coast. Life-threatening storm surge is expected, with landfall occurring later today or early tomorrow near Tampa Bay or Sarasota.
    • Hurricane Leslie : Continues to strengthen over the central Atlantic but is expected to dissipate early next week in open ocean, posing no hazard to land.
    • Disturbance 1: This system is likely to strengthen into Tropical Storm Nadine later today but is expected to move northeast away from land. Formation chance through 48 hours is 40% and formation chance through seven days is 40%.
    • Disturbance 2: A tropical wave is expected to move off the west coast of Africa tonight or early Thursday. Environmental conditions appear only marginally favorable for limited development as it moves westward or west-northwestward across the eastern tropical Atlantic and through the Cabo Verde Islands on Friday. The storm likely will not form within the next week.
