Background will given on selection process

The Mower County Historical Society will host its next Lunchbox History event, “FAQ’s about Minnesota’s New Flag & Seal” at noon on Thursday, July 18 in the Pioneer Building with Dr. Anita Gaul from Minnesota West Community and Technical College.

Learn about the Minnesota State Flag and how the designs for the new state flag and seal were selected.

In 2023 the Minnesota Legislature authorized the creation of the State Emblems Redesign Commission (SERC) and charged the Commission with the task of redesigning the Minnesota state flag and state seal.

Over the course of four months, the Commission—with significant input from the public—produced these new state emblems. Gaul, vice-chair of the commission, will share an insider’s view of the redesign process and answer the Frequently Asked Questions about the process and the final products.

Gaul holds a PhD in History from the University of Iowa and currently works as a history instructor at Minnesota West Community and Technical College in Worthington.

She is the author of “The Women of Southwest Minnesota and the Great War,” published by the Society for the Study of Local and Regional History (2018), as well as “Homely Girls and Pretty Babies: A History of the Murray County Fair,” published by the Murray County Agricultural Society (2013).

Gaul has also authored a number of articles for MNopedia, the online Minnesota encyclopedia published by the Minnesota Historical Society.

Most recently, she served as the vice-chair of the State Emblems Redesign Commission.

Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. for this free event.
