    In Your Community: Duplicate Bridge

    By Daily Herald,

Duplicate players gathered at the Mower County Senior Center at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday. Players come from Austin, Rose Creek, Albert Lea, Mason City, Iowa and Northwood, Iowa.

Tuesdays winners, playing five full tables, were:

First place, Theresa Baldus and Joyce Crowe

Second place, Vandy Newman and Ron Peters

Third place, John Leisen and Rick Stroup

Fourth place, Joyce Kogel and Paul Hanson

Fifth place, Jim Fisher and Dave Ring

This group also had the honor of singing to and welcoming a weekly player who turned 99 years old this week. Edna Knobbe, from Rose Creek, still enjoys playing and places often and has been playing for years, encouraging elderly card players to join us in this game. Come on down to the Senior Center on Tuesdays, meet her and she will vouch for the benefits of this game.

Wednesday we played three tables. Winners were:

First place, Stan Schultz and Tom Flaherty

Second place, Dave Ring and Gail Schultz

Third place, Joyce Kogel and Paul Hanson

We are still working on introducing Duplicate Bridge into the area of our “upperclassmen.” We have many gifted students in our schools. Learning this game could be so beneficial to that age group. It requires analyzing, counting, listening to the opponents and sometimes making a bid that knowingly cannot be made in order to keep the opponents out of the bidding.
