Audit cites lack of progress on homelessness strategies issued five-plus years ago

How does the City of Austin “explain” why it doesn’t have shelter space to enforce Prop B? In 2014 ECHO reported there were 1,539 homeless IN SHELTERS in Austin and only 448 homeless unsheltered for a total of 1,987 homeless; but in the 2023 ECHO point in time count there were only 1,108 homeless in shelters, 1,266 homeless unsheltered, for a total of 2,374; but claim they do not have enough available shelter spaces to allow enforcement of Prop B? Starting with 1,539 shelters in 2014; the city added: 3 old motels (180 shelters—should be 300), the Marshalling Yard (300), that’s 2,019 shelters; but only 1,108 in shelters, that equals 911 AVAILABLE shelters. That’s available shelter space for more than 3/4 of the unsheltered homeless OR has the city been eliminating shelter spaces?

COA keeps digging itself in deeper and deeper into the homeless problem with no end in sight. Throwing more and more public money at the homeless is not going to make them go away either. Of course they will gladly absorb all available money and consider that to be a temporary fix. The more public money the COA gives away the more homeless types will flock to 6th st and zilker park.
