Mrs. Willrea Ward Trivette, age 86, of Sugar Grove, passed away Saturday morning, July 20, 2024. Born September 8, 1937 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of William Dayton Ward, Sr. and Elsie Clay Ward. Mrs. Trivette was a member of Beech Valley Baptist Church. Willrea was a kind and generous lady who loved her family beyond measure. She enjoyed preparing meals for the entire family from product gathered from their annual garden. On special occasions she would join her grandchildren playing in the creek. She loved gardening, watching her flowers grow and working the family farm with her husband and children.
Avery County woman charged in McDowell for drug crimes
A woman from Avery County has been charged in McDowell County for drug crimes. On Monday, July 15, Deputy Jordon Cox stopped a car driven by 30-year-old Shelby Lynn McKinney of Elk Park in Avery County for an expired tag. A passenger in the car was arrested on outstanding warrants, according to a news release from the McDowell County Sheriff's Office.

HIGH COUNTRY — Proposed updates to OSHA standards for fire departments and emergency services agencies could hurt local agencies. The sheriff's office says five fake pages on Facebook are asking people for money to livestream the Greene family funeral. However, investigators say the funeral will not be streamed to the public and the family isn't seeking any donations.
Sheriff’s Office welcomes newest K-9 Officer ‘Ghost’
Avery County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrival of our latest crime fighting K-9. “Deputy K-9 Ghost” is a new addition to its K-9 unit. Ghost is a two-year-old Belgium Malinois that is trained in apprehension, tracking and narcotics detection. Detective Lee received this K-9 after completing an intensive six-week training course at Orchard Knoll K-9 Training Center near Raleigh. Detective K-9 handler Casey Lee is an experienced handler who was assigned “Deputy K-9 Kilo” for many years. “K-9 Kilo” was an outstanding K-9 Deputy who served the Avery County Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Avery County for 10 years before passing away earlier this year.
