AVON LAKE, Ohio (WJW) — The Avon Lake power plant is set to be imploded before mid-August.

According to a Facebook post by the city of Avon Lake , Avon Lake Environmental Redevelopment Group (ALERG) is the site owner that is responsible for the contractors performing the demolition.

ALERG alerted the city that they will use controlled explosives to implode “boiler 9 and 10” and the “precipitator 8 buildings.” There isn’t a specific date yet due to different factors, including weather.

Avon Lake Mayor Mark Spaetzel says the city will set up an exclusion zone during the implosion, spanning about 1,200 feet, plus a safety perimeter outside the exclusion zone where Lake Road and nearby areas will be closed.

Air quality will be monitored before, during and after the implosion, officials say.

“The building they will be imploding has had a complete asbestos removal done on it, and that’s been certified by the EPA. In fact, the EPA will be on-site during the implosion,” said Mayor Spaetzel. “We’re confident that won’t be an issue, but there will be dust.”

The city said it will notify residents the week the implosion will occur and send an emergency alert via the Alert Avon Lake app 30 minutes prior.
