Pat McAfee explains why he doesn't talk about Caitlin Clark anymore

Update: A source close to the Pat McAfee Show tells AA that McAfee wasn’t directed by anyone at ESPN regarding future coverage of Caitlin Clark but that the host was merely offering his own personal reflection. An earlier version and tweet of this story interpreted his comments as referencing ESPN, which the source adamantly denies.

Pat McAfee swung and missed earlier this year trying to defend Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark, the WNBA rookie sensation who plays in his backyard.

During a heavily researched presentation/rant during a show earlier this summer, McAfee referred to Clark as a “white b****” while describing how rival WNBA stars might see her. McAfee later apologized .

But during a simulcast with The Rich Eisen Show on Wednesday, McAfee appeared to confirm that ESPN successfully convinced its outspoken midday host to quiet down the Clark chatter after the incident.

“Well, the universe told me not to talk about her,” McAfee said. “God came in and was like, ‘You know what, pal? Probably go ahead and stop it.'”

When Eisen inquired why, McAfee replied with “Because I’m an idiot, mostly.”

McAfee alluded to feedback he got about how many of the other star rookies this WNBA season, including Chicago’s Angel Reese and L.A.’s Cameron Brink, also drove higher viewership.

After Eisen apologized to McAfee for taking the conversation toward Clark, McAfee again owned up to the slip-up.

“It’s not your bad, it’s 100 percent my bad and that’s what we’re kind of getting to,” McAfee reiterated.

The two then continued their interesting crossover simulcast, hitting on tons of issues across the NFL and all of sports in a return for Eisen to ESPN airwaves for the first time in years.
