Fans eagerly awaiting the start of the 2024 NFL season will have to wait a little longer.

Thursday night’s season opener pitting the Baltimore Ravens against the Kansas City Chiefs was set to start at 8:20 ET, 7:20 in Kansas City. But a storm, which includes thunder and lightning, has forced a delayed start.

The players returned to the locker rooms while members of the media took cover in tunnels — as did the fans at Arrowhead Stadium.

As the field was being cleared, there was a lengthy delay in figuring out an actual start time.

Shortly before 7 p.m. in Kansas City, it was announced that the game would start at 7:40 locally, 8:40 p.m. ET — a delay of roughly 20 minutes.

Fans soon began to return to their seats while the players took the field to resume their pregame warmups.

Thursday will mark the first step in Kansas City’s bid to become the first NFL team ever to win three consecutive Super Bowls. It is a rematch of last season’s AFC Championship Game, which the Chiefs won 17-10 in Baltimore.
