College football legend misses game under mysterious circumstances

Syracuse bested Georgia Tech with a 31-28 upset victory on Saturday, knocking the No. 23 Yellow Jackets out of the top-25.

Only that wasn’t the only story to come out of the ACC showdown, as Georgia Tech radio analyst Joe Hamilton missed the game, with his absence from the broadcast booth having yet to be explained.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution , the absence marked Hamilton’s first since becoming the Yellow Jackets’ radio analyst in 2022. He was replaced in the booth by former Georgia Tech center Sean Bedford, who held the role prior to Hamilton.

While it’s understandable that broadcasters are going to miss assignments from time to time, the most curious part about Hamilton’s absence is that nobody seems to be willing to offer an explanation for it. Per the AJC , the operations director of Georgia Tech’s flagship station, 680 The Fan, did not respond to two emails sent on Saturday seeking comment regarding Hamilton’s absence, while a program spokesperson declined to answer, deferring to the radio station.

Hamilton also didn’t respond to requests for comment from the newspaper. Awful Announcing has also reached out to 680 The Fan, but has yet to receive a response.

A former star quarterback at Georgia Tech, who was elected into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2014. Following his legendary college career, he played professionally in a variety of leagues — including the NFL for four seasons — before embarking on a coaching career that saw him return to his alma mater.

In recent years, Hamilton has had a growing media presence in the Atlanta area, as he co-hosts 680 The Fan’s morning show, The Locker Room , in addition to his duties as the Yellow Jackets’ radio analyst. Awful Announcing will add any relevant updates to this story as they are made available.
