670 The Score’s Matt Spiegel chides Dan Bernstein’s Barstool drama with last name quip

With everyone poking fun at Dan Bernstein’s bizarre rules for using his last name, even 670 The Score’s Matt Spiegel got in on the fun.

Last week, Barstool Eddie joined Spiegel as a guest host of Score Afternoons on 670 and the show began with a crosstalk segment with midday hosts Dan Bernstein and Laurence Holmes, who host the show aptly named Bernstein and Holmes . And during the segment, Eddie had the gall to call Bernstein by the name that’s in the title of his show, which he quickly learned was a big no-no .

Less than 30 seconds later, Bernstein snappily told Eddie, “You can call me Dan or you can call me Bernsy, but you don’t know me like that.” Because apparently you need to forge a relationship with Bernstein before calling him by his last name.

The strange confrontation occurred last Thursday. But it wasn’t until this week that Barstool got a hold of the clip. And Tuesday afternoon, with the Bernstein video spreading like wildfire on social media, Spiegel made a last name quip during his show on 670 The Score, which you can hear around the 25-minute mark of the below clip.

Former 670 afternoon host and current FS1 morning co-host Danny Parkins joined the show on Tuesday to talk Caleb Willliams. At the end of the segment, Parkins started rattling off last names on the show, prompting Spiegel to very politely ask, “Are you good with us using last names on this show?” And after Parkins said “yes,” the proceeded to say, “see ya, Parkins,” with a little extra emphasis on his last name.

It’s obvious Spiegel was poking fun at the Bernstein vs Barstool situation. What wasn’t obvious, however, was whether Parkins knew about the brewing feud. They were only a couple hours removed from Barstool bringing attention to the “you don’t know me like that,” and Parkins admitted he was joining The Score after a midday nap following his FS1 morning show with Craig Carton and Mark Schlereth.

As the clip gained traction Tuesday afternoon, Barstool Eddie posted a social media to provide more context, insisting he meant no harm by uttering the name Bernstein. But Eddie also said “Everyone there was not happy about it,” referring to the afternoon show’s reaction to Bernstein’s attempt at a power move. “You’re just gonna throw a guy on an island who’s gotta host four more hours?”

Maybe Bernstein, whose last name has been used by The Score for nearly 30 years, really is sensitive about it for some reason. Or maybe Bernstein just didn’t like the idea of having to speak with a Barstool personality at work.
