NFL coach upset by press conference question

While the season is still young, things aren’t going well for the New York Giants. Despite scoring three touchdowns and allowing none in Week 2’s game against the Washington Commanders on Sunday, New York lost 21-18, falling to 0-2.

During the press conference following Sunday’s loss, Giants coach Daboll was asked about his job security by Pat Leonard, a columnist and Giants beat reporter for New York Daily News . His response wasn’t out of the ordinary.

“I’ve done this for a long time, Pat,” Daboll said . “My focus is on our football team.”

That’s an expected answer from a coach being asked such a question. But while the next question was being asked, Daboll repeatedly turned his head back in Leonard’s direction, staring at the reporter.

We can see why Daboll was annoyed with this question. The season is only two weeks old. And it’s not as though the Giants have been a complete mess in Daboll’s tenure. Daboll was the NFL Coach of the Year in 2022, leading the Giants to the postseason and a playoff win.

That said, the question isn’t exactly coming out of nowhere. Annoying? Sure — but not unfair. This is because of everything that has happened since that 2022 season.

While Daboll’s enjoyed some success in New York, it hasn’t been a smooth road since 2022. The Giants followed Daboll’s positive first season with a dismal 6-11 campaign in 2023.

Longtime NFL coach Bum Phillips once said , “There are two kinds of coaches, them that’s fired and them that’s gonna be fired.”

A 6-13 record over the last two seasons makes it fair to wonder if Daboll will soon move from the latter category and into the former.

At the very least, it places urgency on Daboll on the Giants to turn things around quickly. If that doesn’t happen, he’s going to hear more of these questions in future press conferences.
