Sportswriter furious at 'Dan Le Batard Show'

Trolling Greg Cote has long been one of the staples of Tuesdays on The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz .

But this week, the show’s hijinks with the Miami Herald columnist went too far for his liking.

What started with the longtime bit of the show cutting Cote’s fantasy football update off with the hard network out eventually led to the 70-year-old walking out of the studio. And somehow, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini was caught in the middle of it, while also aiding the Le Batard Show ‘s efforts.

After cutting off Cote’s update about his fantasy team — Greg’s Lobos — the show returned from a break by promising him space for his weekly self-involved segment. But rather than actually letting him give his update, the show repeatedly replayed the sound imaging for the segment each time he began to speak, riling up a clearly frustrated Cote.

“You want me to walk out? I’ll walk out,” Cote asked Le Batard.

“No, I don’t want you to walk out,” the Meadowlark Media co-founder replied.

“You walk out, I walk out. I’m telling you right now,” Jon “Stugotz” Weiner added.

It’s also worth noting that the show’s executive producer — and thus the one responsible for playing the sounds — is Cote’s son, Chris Cote.

Le Batard proceeded to introduce Russini, who was joining the show for her own weekly hit. But even after admitting that she doesn’t care about anyone else’s fantasy football team (or dreams, for that matter), she encouraged Cote to give his update, which only proved to be a setup for the show to cut him off with the sounder for a final time before he made good on his promise to walk out.

“I’m sorry. Just back in my day, you would never do that,” Russini said in an apparent reference to Cote’s semi-regular “Back in my Day” segment. “Like you would never be disrespectful to somebody on the show who’s just trying to share what they care about.”

Le Batard went on to let the audience know that this update was especially meaningful to Cote, as the Lobos had allegedly scored a record-breaking 220 points.

“Did he play Saquon?” Russini asked, referring to Eagles star running back Saquon Barkley.

“We may never know,” produced Billy Gil replied.

As it turns out, Cote wasn’t gone for good and he soon made an appearance on the show’s therapy couch where he gave his long-awaited update to Stugotz. Much like pro wrestling, the Le Batard Show often blurs the lines between fiction and reality, with Russini’s prodding helping bring new life to the long-running bit.
