Radio host couldn't believe chaotic Mets-Braves Game 1 matchup

On Monday, the most important games of the MLB season took place for both the New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves that will ultimately determine who would secure the final two postseason positions in the National League, which had SiriusXM talk show host Chris Russo fired up on Mad Dog Unleashed.

Heading into Monday, the Braves, Mets, and Arizona Diamondbacks all had a chance to earn the two NL Wild Card spots that are up for grabs.

The Mets and Braves had  a doubleheader on Monday, which the entirety of the NL Playoff teams are keeping a close eye on.

The NL postseason scenario is a rather simple one. If either team sweeps the doubleheader, the losing team in the doubleheader would be missing out on the postseason. And if the two teams split the doubleheader, both teams would end up getting into the postseason.

Game 1 of the doubleheader, which had a 1:10 ET first pitch, was largely the talk of the sports world on Monday afternoon. And for good reason, as it was incredibly entertaining matchup filled with moments that made it appear like either team could come away with the win.

Chris Russo made it a point to react in real-time to the game on Mad Dog Unleashed Monday , which led to a roller coaster of emotions from him throughout the show.

Jimmy Traina of Sports Illustrated took to social media to share a number of clips of Russo reacting in real-time, starting with the Mets’ six-run inning in the top of the eighth inning to take control of the game.

“If they did win that nightcap, they would play in San Diego and the Mets would play in Milwaukee,” said Russo. “And did he just hit a home run? That is Nimmo and he just hit the ball out of the ballpark in the upper deck in right! And the Mets now have a 6-3 lead. A six-run outburst in the top of the eighth inning against Schwellenback, Jimenez and Iglesias. And the Mets now are in excellent shape to win this game. And now everyone in Arizona has become a Mets fan for the rest of the day. Oh my goodness.”

Just as fast as things shifted in the Mets’ favor in this game, they would shift right back to the Braves’ direction in the bottom of the inning. The Braves would score four runs in the bottom of the eighth to take back the lead.

“Here’s the 3-1 from Diaz,” said Russo doing play-by-play of the game on his show. “And there is a ball into left field and pretty well hit. And it’s off the wall! It gets by the left fielder! One run will score, two runs will score! And the Atlanta Braves score another run! A three-run double off the wall in left field by our good buddy (Ozzie) Albies. And Atlanta leads 7-6 in an absolute classic down in Atlanta!

“The Mets, who had a six-run eighth inning bring Diaz in. And Diaz gives it up! Back to back to back to back. And now all of the sudden the Mets… Oh my goodness, how (will) they bounce back in a Game 2 scenario will be fascinating. Iglesias now can close it as New York trails 7-6 as Albies just missed a grand slam out to deep left on a 3-1 pitch.”

Russo seemed to think that the twists and turns of this game were over. But he would be sadly mistaken, as Mets star shortstop Francisco Lindor would come through when it mattered most in the top of the ninth inning with a two-run home run to take the lead. And as you may expect, Russo again couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

“Now he’s got an opportunity against the Braves back of the bullpen,” said Russo of Lindor. “Now he hits a fly ball that’s pretty well hit to deep right-center! And this ball is outta here! Lindor has just golfed one out! And the Mets lead 8-7. A two-run homer from Lindor and New York has the advantage! Oh my goodness what a baseball game! Looked like a fly ball at first but it carried and carried and carried. Harris scaled the wall and it left it. And New York now leads 8-7.”

Fortunately for Russo, there would be no more huge momentum swings in this game. The Mets would close the door in the bottom of the ninth inning, clinching their postseason birth in the process.
