    Spurs announce new play-by-play announcer

The San Antonio Spurs announced Wednesday they have hired Jacob Tobey as the team’s new TV play-by-play announcer.

Tobey will replace longtime Spurs TV voice Bill Land, who announced in August that he will be retiring from his broadcast duties nearly a year after revealing a blood cancer diagnosis. Land started his career with the Spurs in 1990, and became the team’s lead broadcast voice in 2008.

Tobey will join former Spurs forward and lead analyst Sean Elliott behind the mic, who has been calling local broadcasts for the team since 2004.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Jacob to the Spurs family,” Spurs Senior Director of Broadcast Mike Kickirillo said in a press release, “His passion for the game, combined with his broadcast experience and holistic sports knowledge, make him a perfect fit for our team. We’re confident that Spurs fans will quickly embrace Jacob’s energy and insightful commentary.”

Before taking the Spurs job, Tobey served as a play-by-play voice for Fox Sports and Pac-12 Network. Since 2020, Tobey has worked for Denver’s local station 9NEWS as a weekend sports anchor and covered the Denver Nuggets’ title run in 2023.

Given the hype surrounding the Spurs in Victor Wembanyama’s sophomore season, the team will appear in a league-high 21 nationally televised games this season across ESPN/ABC, TNT, and NBA TV.

Locally, the team will continue airing on Bally Sports Southwest and Bally Sports San Antonio as part of an agreement struck with the NBA in August that will see franchises inked to Bally deals stay on the networks through at least the 2024-25 season. Presumably, as the Spurs did last season, some games will also air on local over-the-air affiliates. Last year, the team aired 11 games on CBS affiliate KENS and four games on CW35.

Tobey begins his Spurs broadcasting career on Monday when the Spurs open the preseason against the Oklahoma City Thunder, which will air on CW35 in San Antonio.
