When Dustin Fox announced he was leaving Cleveland radio station 92.3 The Fan in August, many were caught by surprise. It was a radio spot he called home for 13 years. He said the departure was for personal reasons, and he just recently specified on those reasons.

The shock, however, didn’t come to anyone he was working with.

“It was not a surprise to anybody internally at The Fan or anybody close to me at the station or anybody in my life personally that matters or whatever,” Fox told Barrett Media. “Everyone sort of knew that the time was coming, and I’m very lucky and very blessed that my situation is — and I still have other gigs; it’s not like I’m just leaving my only source of income to watch my kids do activities. I’ve worked really hard for my career and where I’m at.”

The five-hour long show created an environment that he couldn’t escape from.

“I couldn’t even call my insurance agent during the show because I’d have four minutes during a commercial break, and I say that kind of in jest,” Fox explained. “When you’re doing a five-hour talk show, you can’t step aside and not be in it. It’s not like you can sit at your desk at a 9-5 and veg out or look at whatever, Instagram, for an hour.”

That didn’t take away from the rewarding feeling he got when he would engage with the audience.

He doesn’t regret his decision. The time he gets to spend with loved ones and progress he’s made with his mental health, his priorities have changed. The struggles he endured helped those tuning into the show as well.

“I’ve talked to strangers on the phone about stuff,” Fox said, “because I’m just very passionate about my recovery and where I’m at with my mental health and life that I’m just so happy and proud that I just feel like I want everyone to feel the way that I feel right now.”

In the original Barrett Media article, they reference football injuries could have played a role (from Fox himself) in some of these mental health issues.

Fox was diagnosed with one concussion during his playing career at Ohio State and in the NFL, but in an article with the Canton Rep in March 2016 , said he felt as thought he had one “every day in practice.”

“There was always a situation where I hit somebody and my eyes would go blurry for a little bit and I’d have a little bit of cobwebs. But then I’d be like, ‘Let’s go.’”

He even admitted taking two big shots during Ohio State’s 2003 national championship that should have placed him on the sidelines.
