Broadcaster's eccentric TD call draws praise

Over the years, Fox college football play-by-play voice Eric Collins has become beloved for his over-the-top broadcasting style. And on the call of Saturday’s FS2 matchup between Boise State and Utah State, Collins went back to his trademark style on the first offensive play of the game.

The matchup was perhaps set up for Collins to entertain given how excellent Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty has been early on this season. Coming into the game, Jeanty held an overwhelming lead over every other running back in college football in most rushing categories, including rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.

Jeanty didn’t wait long to give Collins a highlight to lose his mind about, taking Boise State’s first offensive play to the house for a 63-yard touchdown. Collins jumped on the opportunity by showing that passion that viewers have adored him for.

“Jeanty, his first touch,” said Collins. “And typical Ashton Jeanty. Look at him go! You can’t bring him down! Is he!? Yes he will! A touchdown for Ashton Jeanty on his first touch!”

If you listen to the call, you may have heard a very noticeable laugh from analyst Spencer Tillman just before Jeanty crossed the endzone. Which is largely understandable given how every highlight Collins ever calls sounds like he is about to lose his voice.

This wasn’t a one-off incident either. It didn’t take Jeanty long to have Collins singing his praises again, breaking a tackle and taking a rush attempt 75 yards to the endzone at the beginning of the second quarter.

“Oh, look at Jeanty go,” said Collins as Tillman again was laughing in the background. “Does he have enough speed?! I think he does! Touchdown Jeanty! He’s unbelievable!”

Similar to Gus Johnson, Collins has made a career out of bringing his passion to each and every game that he calls. Whether that be as a college football broadcaster like he was on Saturday or for his broadcasting responsibility with the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA.

You either love or hate Collins depending on how boisterous you would prefer for a broadcaster to be. But luckily, most of the feedback from viewers on social media about his on-air performance Saturday was overwhelmingly positive.
